::(v/a) Life Before 40 LP
(Low Life Records)

An essential compilation of the UK's finest hip-hop. Low Life was started by Braintax in 1992 and has released gems by Jehst, Rodney P, Task Force, Skinnyman and many others. Not too mention they also run some of nicest package design around, and this one is no different : Tri-fold, cardboard case with silver embossing and inserts. Plus bonus mix cd by Kam.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Dday One - Loop Extensions LP
(Content Records)

An exceptional hip-hop album, almost entirely instrumental. Crafted from the jazz and soul of the past, but given a new breath of it's own. The track 'Unstable Material 2' features Existereo, Subtitle, Awol One and Metfly and is also available on the Offbeats 2.0 Compilation on Subversiv (who is also releasing a CD version of this album soon)
Check out an interview with Dday HERE

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Qwel & Jackson Jones - Dark Day LP
(Galapagos4)
Damn, time flies. This is already Qwel's 4th solo album. Combining the wit, cadence, and relevence we've all grown to love, Qwel and Jones craft quite a moving album.
Listen to an MP3 from the album
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Stick Figures - Stick Figures LP
(Galapagos4)
Robust and Prolyphic team up to release a simple little hip-hop album. No skits or concepts, just some serious rapping and some quality production.

Recommendations
::Outerlimitz - Suicide Prevention LP
(Galapagos4)
Chicago crew consisting of Qwazaar (of Typical Cats), Silence and He.llsent drops their 1st official release. Silence's unique brand of production booms in a new way. No looped breaks here, hypnotic low ends are complimented perfectly by the heavy drum sequencing. A breath fresh air in the land of copy cats.
Listen to an MP3
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Skyrider - Master of Deception 7"
(Endemik Music)
This is the kind of genre-defying release we love here at erasoul. Originally appearing on Skyrider's debut album '47:34', 'Masters of Deception' was reworked for this release, featuring singer/song writer Jim Wurster in a post-folk anthemn with political leanings. On the reverse side, Odd Nosdam (of Anticon/Clouddead) remixes Skyrider's 'No Good' into a swirling soundscape.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Moshe - Tending To The Sheep LP
(Milled Pavement)
Northeast Producer Moshe makes one serious album, full of thumping beats and lots of mcs. When the drums stray from repetition, this gets real interesting. Guests includ : jdWalker, dj mayo, nomar slevik, Bread, and many others.
Listen to an MP3 from the album
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Moshe - Miles Away Remix EP
(Milled Pavement)
Remixes of 'Miles Away' by KGB, Agent8, Mike Clouds, J.Hjort, and Vela Uniform. Also included is the epic posse cut 'Helping People (Is Cool)' featuring Nomar Slevik, K-the-I???, Sontiago and Syn the Shaman
Listen to an MP3 of 'Helping People'

::J-Live - The Hear After LP
>(Penalty Recordings)
One of the most respected artists (both producer and lyricist) in Hip-Hop returns with his 3rd full-length, 'The Hear After'. 'Brooklyn Public Part 1' and 'Weather the Storm' come through as the strongest tracks, bringing together a theme and style.
: August 2005:
Recommendations
::soso - tenth street and clarence LP
(ClothesHorseRecords)
soso continues to quietly make some of the most beautiful and personal hip-hop, both lyrical and instrumental. Don't even think about coming to a conclusion before listening to this album. some MP3s
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::BrokenKlutch - Marilyn Mayce 2" EP
(Organic Plague)
An imaginary (hip-hop) collaboration with Marilyn Manson. But it's good. This really must be heard, to appreciate.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Rajbot - Modern Complaints LP
(Spacement Records)
Raj is more creative than you. Lo-fi instruments, bright and shiny breaks, and a little glitch and noise. But not experimental,just to be experimental, there's some serious melody and structure. Apart from producing his own beats, he can also rap quite nicely. Part scientist, part political satirist, but never too serious. Catch up.
Listen to an MP3 from the album
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Rajbot and Aamir - Split 7"
(Spacement Records)
The A-side showcases Raj on the production and vocals and on the flipside, Aamir of the Escape Artists rips over K-the-I??? beat. Nice screenprinted covers, very limited edition. Support the independent.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Hood - Outside Closer LP
(Domino)
I forgot to mention this album before, so I can't leave it out this month. I don't know what I like about this album the most, but it's got a lot more going on then their previous material. The space is compact, the melodies skip, vocals sweep within strings. Easily one of my favorite albums this year.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
: July 2005:
Recommendations
::Maker - Shooting the Breeze LP

The first Nationally Released album from this MN group impresses from the start. The simple recipe of fresh beats, rhymes and cuts is cooked up nicely.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::DiVinci - Lost Recordings 2000-2004 LP
(Nonsense Records)
An awesomely spastic beat album. Using a couple MPC's, DiVinci (Producer of Sol.illaquists) takes IDM and Jungle influences and make hip-hop beats for the future. If you enjoy the programming of Jel and Dangermouse, you'll like this.

(Rhythm Method Records)
A swinging, live hip-hop band that sticks to the basics. Masterful instrumentation and throw-back lyricism should solidify this band's place in music.Visit Thing-One's site HERE

::Tru-Paz - State of Emergency LP (URBNET)
A real dope Hip-Hop album, laced with nice, earthy beats with a range of vocals including rapping, singing, and some ragga chants. Quality stuff, for sure.

::Chief Kamachi and the Juju Mob - Black Candles LP
(Good Hands/Eastern Conference)
Another dope album that might get over-looked.

: April 2005:
Recommendations

::The Exposures - Lost Recordings 2000-2004 LP
(Eastern Developments)
You'll immediately know why this is released on Prefuse 73's EastDev label. The start-stop melodies and micro slice compositions do not even hint at the origin of the music. Hired in the 70's by a large German TV company, these 3 composers crafted the sound of the station. Not what you would expect at all.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Fast Breakin' Classics - Heist City LP
(Positronic Records)
A live hip-hop band with some good energy and some serious instrumentation. Visit them HERE

::Prostitute Karaoke - Volume 1 12" EP
(Audio 8 Recordings)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

::Pugslee Atomz - Playing With Matches LP
(Audio 8 Recordings)
The Nacrobat's founder's 3rd full length listens like a whirlwind. Maybe sounding a little busy at times, but still better than most everything I hear. Also, check out the Vandal Squad 12" featuring Seel Fresh and DJ Intel. Priduction by Polyphonic, Credo, Maker, and others.

::Benyomen - The Circles In Which We Walk LP (ophotn)
Some more dope material from the Life For the Better crew....Peep them HERE

::Blak Twang ft. K9 - Ghetto Children Sex Education 12" Single
(Bad Magic/Wall of Sound)
A well done track with a good message. This is needed now, more than ever. Not preachy, so don't be scared. Taken from the new album, The Rotten club.
